History

There are approximately five to seven thousand Croatian migrants and their children living in Canberra and Queanbeyan. As in other regions around Australia, the majority of migrants from Croatia came to Canberra in the 1960s and 1970s. Traditionally, Croatians are a proud nation – proud of their culture, their traditions and their Catholic heritage.

In the early 1970s, Church authorities in Croatia, with the permission and blessing of the Archdiocese, began a Catholic migrant mission in Canberra. This marked the beginning of organized pastoral work by Croatian priests and nuns in Canberra, Queanbeyan and Bateman’s Bay.
